Close Enough's Free Generator Review: One Face a Day, No Strings

Every AI headshot site has a free thing out front. Usually it's a cardboard cutout of a free thing: you upload a selfie, you watch a progress bar, and at the end a watermark sits on your forehead like a parking ticket. Close Enough does something stranger. It just gives you the photo.

One selfie in, one headshot out, once a day. No account, no email, no card, no watermark. I kept waiting for the catch and it never showed up.

How it actually goes

You drop in a single photo. The site is picky about it in a reasonable way: front-facing, decent light, no sunglasses, just you. Then you pick a background and an outfit, and here's where the free tier reminds you it's a free tier. There are 60 backgrounds and six of them are unlocked. The outfit list runs to nearly 150 and about a dozen are yours. Everything else wears a little PRO badge.

One thing the free version drops: the paid wizard lets you filter outfits by men's or women's, and here you scroll a single mixed list. Half the thumbnails are a woman, half a man, and two adjacent tiles can carry the same name. Look at the pictures rather than the labels.

I took Slate Blue and a navy blazer with a tie, which is the free tier's idea of a safe choice, and it's not wrong.

Then the waiting, and this is the one place the site tripped. The page says about a minute. My first run took four. My second came back in seconds. So the number on screen is a guess, not a promise, and you should be ready for either.

The part that surprised me

The result is good. Properly good. It looks like me on a day when I remembered I own an iron. The face is mine, not a smoothed-over stranger with my haircut, which is the usual failure mode of free tools. 1024 pixels square, no watermark, no "upgrade to download" gate.

One per day, and the site says so upfront instead of letting you find out after you've uploaded. Come back tomorrow and you get another. That's the whole deal.

What it's for

This is a taste test, and it knows it. One photo, one look, a shortlist of styles, and their basic model rather than the good one. The paid package is sitting right there on the same page with 24 headshots and the better AI, and the free tool exists to make you curious about it.

As bait goes, it's unusually honest bait.

Pros:

• No signup, no email, no card. None.
• No watermark, and the file is yours.
• The likeness is genuinely there.
• The daily limit is stated before you upload, not after.

Cons:

• Six backgrounds and a dozen outfits out of a very large menu.
• 1K resolution, so don't plan on printing it.
• "About a minute" meant four on my first run.
• One a day means one a day.
